The Gfinity Elite Series Australia has a firm kick-off date now – on June 2, 2018 the multi-game esports tournament will launch at the Gfinity Australia Arena in Moore Park, Sydney. With a release date in hand, Gfinity AU also announced another of the series’ city-based teams – Melbourne Order become the third team to join the competition.
June second is a little later than anticipated, as the Elite Series’ Australian launch has been pushed back a tad, but it’s awesome to have a firm date for launch now. Add to that another team in the mix, and it’s starting to get exciting if you’re a fan of high quality Aussie esports.
Melbourne having two teams is a little odd although Order was an obvious choice – Jake “Spawn” Tiberi, Order’s GM, is an unashamed Melbourne cheerleader. As usual, Sydney is too cool to be bothered by it, because everyone knows Sydney is the capital of Australian esports.
“We’re excited to further cement our presence as part of the Melbourne esports community by becoming a representative of Melbourne in the Gfinity Elite Series Australia,” said Spawn in the press release. “It’s a great opportunity to represent our fans locally with some of the biggest names in Australia, and we look forward to the competition.”
There are still a few other teams yet to be announced. Adelaide and Legacy seem like an easy fit, but I’d love to see Brisbane and maybe even Auckland/New Zealand represented.
