Dune was originally written in 1965 by Frank Herbert and follows Paul Atreides’ quest to restore his family’s control of the desert planet Arrakis. Arrakis is the only source of the most valuable commodity in the universe, melange, and control is highly coveted.

Legendary closed a deal for TV and film rights with Dune author Frank Herbert’s estate in 2016.

Director David Lynch adapted the first Dune novel for his 1984 film, Dune, which starred Kyle MacLachlan in the leading role. In 2000, John Harrison adapted the novel into a mini-series for the Sci-Fi Channel. In the following years, other attempts have been made to adapt Frank Herbert’s work, such as a film with Peter Berg attached to direct, but none were successful.
